I'm Back from Worldcon

I'm back from Worldcon, and am damn glad I am taking tomorrow off. I'm too pooped to pop, which is good. Herewith, con / Hugo thoughts, in random order:

1) Jim Hines ([livejournal.com profile] jimhines) Hugo win was nice to see. I was glad he didn't go to the Chris Garcia School of Acceptance Speeches ;-) I was also impressed that he recused himself from further fan-writing Hugos. Nice touch!

2) John Scalzi had better be careful - with the outstanding job he did as Hugo host, he could have a new permanent gig. Watching him work was like watching Bob Hope host the Academy Awards - Scalzi was efficient, funny without being mean and appropriately self-depreciating. Again, nice job.

3) Holy moley, who designed the Hyatt Regency Chicago convention space? There were rooms on three floors of two towers, which was hard enough. Then somebody decided to color-code them by level, picking such distinct colors as gold and bronze. Finding anything was a challenge, compounded by traffic jams going up and down escalators.

4) Speaking of the Hyatt, it's the home of the $22.95 plus tax breakfast buffet. After day one of that, I, like many fans, went outside the hotel for breakfast. There was a bar/grill/drinks-after-work place in the attached underground shopping mall, which had a $9.99 breakfast that got a lot of my business.

5) My British friends, specifically [livejournal.com profile] daveon and his friend the astronomer Dave Clements (don't know if he has a web presence or not) expressed a desire for "Chicago-style pizza." So, I led them to Giordanos, which was swamped on a Thursday night but eventually fed us well.

6) I sold a decent amount of books, but Worldcons are not for new authors. I mean, Mike Resnick, a man who won his first Hugo in 1989, was working the booth next to me!

I've lost track of the number of new and interesting people, including this lady who gave a TED talk about what we don't know about how penises evolved. Perhaps more thoughts tomorrow.
