Reviews - Movies and Book

Sorry for the radio silence. I knew in advance Monday was going to be hectic, but a computer glitch made it more so, and problems continued into Tuesday. But the computer isn't glitching, so here are some reviews.

Movie Reviews
Over the weekend, I watched two movies on pay-per-view. The first one was Act of Valor, which is unique in that the onscreen talent were actual Navy SEAL team members. They were doing SEAL-type stuff, which was cool, but the movie avoided being a cartoon by pointing out the real costs of war.

The second movie was Haywire, which was a straight-up action flick. The "gimmick" there was that the female lead, Gina Carano, is a real-life mixed-martial-arts fighter. Clearly she choreographed the fight scenes, with very realistic results. Other than that, Haywire has nothing in particular to separate itself from the horde of action / spy movies.

Book Review

I also found the time to read Jim Hines' ([livejournal.com profile] jimhines) book Libriomancer. This as a modern AKA urban fantasy, and stars Issac Vainio, an apparently mild-mannered librarian that can pull magic out of books. I found the book an entertaining read, especially Jim's take on sparkly vampires! It's Jim's hardcover debut, and a worthy addition to your library.
