My friend Bill, whom you met at the Worldcon, has real issues with the dying thing. When his mother was very sick a year or so ago he had to fight to the point of having a complaint made against him by one of the Doctors at his hospital over the treatment. As far as he was concerned the treatments they were proposing were more likely to kill her than do any good.
She had anemia, and the doctor wanted to an endoscopic investigation, which has a high risk of perforating the bowel in an older person and, as he asked, what the hell are you going to do if she does have cancer? There's little point in doing surgery or radiation on a frail 86 year old.
His partner and the surgeon she was pumping gas for once had a fight with a family about refusing to agree to a kidney transplant with a 92 year old with dementia...
