Tell me more of this "global warming" that you speak of

I spent the early AM today shoveling 8 inches of snow from my sidewalks, and will probably have another inch or two when I get back. Not very warm ;-)

Actually, while down in Puerto Vallarta, I read Jared Diamond's Collapse, which documented how a number of civilizations went down the tubes. One of his points was that, on a human scale, even a sudden climate change isn't. You'll have a drought, broken by occasional heavy rains, but over time the total rainfall is declining. This snow may be a case in point.

In other news, my great-uncle Jerry Van Vickle died this morning. He'd been ill for years, and we were truthfully expecting him to not make it this long. I'll miss the guy, but his suffering is over.

Here, it's been continually above freezing all winter and the snow melts within days of falling, because of all the rainstorms we get, often with the snow. This has what the last three winters have been like. I'm only 21 and even the winter's of my childhood had lots of consistent snowfall. I don't know what winters will look like when I'm 41, let alone the global environment. Even with my optimism about the future, global warming leaves me unsettled about our collective future, somewhere I'll be spending most of life in.

Collapse was an excellent book, and my condolences.

Two words: Snow Blower.

I never had one before. Bought a used blower from a neighbor last month. Man I love that thing.
