Advantages of Not Living On Mars, Part 57
So, I wasn't going to post today, then something very interesting happened. A part fell off of my car.
I was pulling into the parking lot of a local restaurant about two hours ago, and I heard a whirring grind(1) followed by a clunk. I parked, and a guy came walking up to me holding a six-inch metal wheel. "This fell off of your car," he said.
I thanked the guy, looked around under the car, and realized that 1) I had no idea where the part came from or what it did and 2) had no way to re-attach it. (If I'd had greater presence of mind, I'd have a picture of the part to show you.)
Now, were I living on Mars, I'd have to decide whether to drive the vehicle or attempt a repair(2). Here on Earth, I called GM Roadside Assistance and had them take the car to the dealership. While waiting for the tow truck, I went into the restaurant and had dinner.
There are advantages to living on Earth, and having money. Roadside assistance is one of them.
(1) In truth, I heard the same whirring grind a couple of times today, so I was planning to take it to the dealership, just not on Friday night.
(2) Of course, on Mars, I'd be able to call up a detailed onboard schematic that told me what the part was and the limitations of operating without it.
