Sci-Fi Weekend
The previous two weekends were busy with social activities. This weekend I had a clear calendar, and decided to fill it with science-fictional activities. Herewith, thoughts on two such activities.
Movie: The Creator
First, I decided to see the new science fiction movie The Creator. It's a movie in which humans fight AI robots. My elevator pitch for the movie is "Star Wars: Rogue One with the US military playing the role of the Evil Empire." I was actually struck by the number of white people as actors on the US side.
Book: The Mote in God's Eye
In November at Windycon, my science fiction book club will discuss The Mote in God's Eye, a novel by Jerry Pournelle and Larry Niven. Wikipedia tells me it was written in 1974, but it feels like it was written much earlier, I think due to the almost complete lack of women in the novel. Despite that, it seems to have held up pretty well.
