Catching Up - Odds and Ends
May. 12th, 2006 04:32 pmI've had a busy week, so this post is more of a catch-up. Last Sunday, my Rotary Club hosted a dinner for graduating high school students. We call it our "Top Ten" dinner, honoring students who graduate in the top 10% of their class. It's a nice meal, and we give each student a plaque. This year we got the mayor of Darien to attend, and she gave a short speech.
On Tuesday, I helped our club hand out dictionaries to local third-graders. We did this at two schools, Our Lady of Peace (the local Catholic school) and Lace Elementary (public.) These dictionaries are from The Dictionary Project a charitable group out of North Carolina. We get paperbacks from them for @ $1.50 each, and tell the kids to write their name inside. I was shocked at how enthused the kids were to get their own books! We handed out to one classroom, and were waiting in the hall to hit another room. Even in the hall, we could hear the kids excitedly looking up words in their dictionary!
From there, I went directly to Milwaukee, WI to attend a convention for work. This was my fourth year attending, and I felt the proceedings were a little "old hat." Still, I could have been at the office.
Lastly, I discovered that there is a science fiction convention, ToBeCONtinued, just 2 miles from my house this weekend. I found out about it from John Scalzi's blog. They had a monumental screwup (in failing to) get Robert J. Sawyer, the Guest of Honor, to the Con, which they blamed on "travel restrictions" from Canada. Actually, the whole thing sounds like a bit of a train wreck. Still, since I'm so close, I'll probably drop by for the day on Saturday.
