I wasn't planning to (semi) live-blog DucKon, but the plan is the first casualty on contact with the enemy. So:
Opening ceremony - cute, and not your typical fare. The Klingon contingent did a corny skit entitled "Red-shirt Survivor." Three nameless red-shirt-wearing folks and the Klingon GOH (Keith R.A. DeCandido, who writes Star Trek books featuring Klingons) were killed off in typical dumb Star Trek fashion.
After that, the con committee did the typical introductions, and ended with a show by the Young Fan GOH, Laura McLeod. She works for a bird sanctuary, and did some live flight demos with a trained hawk. Very unusual and a little disconcerting with a hawk flying by at hair-height.
After that, I adjourned to the writer's track, an editing session led by the always-capable Jackie Powers. The Klingons were across the hall, and seemed to be having an good time, judging by the noise levels.
Due to a booking error, I ended up getting the biggest suite in the joint (two rooms, massive hot tub, etc.) for the regular suite price. So, after a walk-by on the party circuit (a little sparse, but probably typical for a Friday) I retired to my mini-palace.
Alas, sleep was not to come. We've had about an inch of rain in Chicago, starting at midnight. At 3:30 AM, some of that rain decided to invade my room. Well, actually quite a bit, dripping down on the metal windowframe. Not much sleep after that, and I finally decided to just give up and get up.
