Derailed - An Idiot Plot?
Jul. 31st, 2006 05:30 pmLast light, I watched the movie Derailed on Comcast's pay-per-view.
For $3.99, it was worthwhile entertainment, but I'm glad I didn't pay the $9 ($15 with popcorn) to see it in the theater. The basic plot is entertaining enough - Clive Owens (as Charles Schine) and Jennifer Aniston (as Lucinda Harris) are married executives who have an affair, but fall victim to an extortion racket. The first third of the movie - up to this point - is entertaining enough, and has a harrowing rape scene, but then it fell apart for me.
Without giving away the plot (and this is a plot-driven movie), the middle third of the picture is Owen's character running around being an idiot. He has several opportunities to extract himself, but doesn't, seemingly unable to bring himself to tell the truth, or even a convincing lie.
Then, apparently "Chuck" (as the bad guys call him) takes a bottle full of smart pills, and suddenly he comes up with ways to turn the tables on the bad guys. Meanwhile, they've been taking dumb pills. For example, the bad guys leave a large amount of cash in Charles' own briefcase, allowing him to retrieve it no questions asked.
Overall, it's an OK picture, but only if you get it on sale.
