I grew up in a small town, and at least when I was a kid, the doors to the school were never locked during the day. I recently had occasion to visit three grade schools here in Darien (a suburb of Chicago). My Rotary club hands out dictionaries to third-graders as part of our literacy projects. (They're really cool - 500+ pages of information, and not just word definitions. Visit The Dictionary Project for details.)
In each of these three schools, the main doors were locked, and you had to get buzzed in. If they couldn't see you from the office, there was a camera. Until last week, I used to think that was a little excessive. Now I think it will be required for every school.
