I went out to see the new movie The Departed last night. It's gotten a lot of good reviews, but I personally think it's overrated. Not that it's bad, per se, just OK.

My first problem was that the movie was a bit too long and leisurely, especially the first hour. There just wasn't much happening. I don't think it's spoiling anything to tell you that the basic plot, borrowed from a Hong Kong chop-socky movie called Internal Affairs is an attempt by the police to plant a mole in a gangster's organization while finding the mole he's got in their's. A plot like this revolves around double-crosses, and when stuff started to happen, there were a few too many double-crosses for my taste.

Martin Scorsese directs, and he's shot this one in Peckinpah-Vision (tm) - every gunshot produces massive blood splatters. Also, the script is a little bit over the top - more then a few lines produced chuckles in the audience. Again, don't get me wrong. Compared to say, Saw III it's a masterpiece. On it's own merits, it's just OK.
