Casino Royale
Dec. 3rd, 2006 11:33 amSo I went and saw "Casino Royale" the reboot of the James Bond franchise. It was quite good. A few thoughts:
1) Gadgets were kept to a minimum, and generally off-the-shelf. The most high-tech I saw was a handheld defibrillator.
2) Unlike the last 15 or so flicks, the movie was NOT wall-to-wall action. It actually felt a little slow, but only in comparison to the typical movie. The advantage to this was Bond and the other characters had actual, like character arcs!. They also went back to spending some cash and screen time showing really beautiful scenery.
3) This is a reboot, so Bond has just become a double-oh. He's a bit rough around the edges, and far from invincible.
4) I haven't actually read Casino Royale, but everybody tells me that a lot of the book made it into the movie, at least by franchise standards. It seemed a bit more, well, literary, in a good way. People did things that made sense, as opposed to what the screenwriter wanted them to do.
In other news, I have almost finished the autumn issue of Shimmer magazine. When I do, probably tonight or tomorrow, I'll post my review. If you're not subscribing to this gem of a magazine, you should be.
