On the off-chance that there are some blog readers who don't also read Speculations.com, I re-post here a query about a book I read as a child. If anybody knows the title and/or author, please post in the comments:

Does this novel plot sound familiar? Mars has been thinly-settled by humans, who are in part doing archaeological work on the ruins of an ancient civilization. Curiously, all the buildings are in good shape but empty. Unfortunately, radiation has caused a mutation such that spacers can only have male children - so they conduct raids on Earth to kidnap women. The plot gets even weirder - the ancient civilization was built by humans who had been transported to Mars by aliens unknown.

The old-Martian humans are also doing star travel by taking the entire population with them, and partway through the story they return. They discover that Phobos is hollow, and being used by aliens as a base.

I read this in the 1970s (while in grade school) but I have no idea when it came out and I'm reasonably sure it wasn't intended as a juvenile.
