Hope in Iraq?
Jun. 26th, 2007 02:10 pmThe always interesting Charles Sheehan-Miles has an interesting post on his blog titled Why there still may be hope in Iraq. It links to an article in the Small Wars Journal called Understanding Current Operations.
The article, which is well worth reading in full, lays out the current strategy of the "surge." It also points out that the surge is just starting - all that has gone on since January is just getting troops in theater. What I find both gratifying and distressing is that the strategy is "Counterinsurgency 101" which is cutting of the various insurgent groups (Al-Queda, Shia militia) from the population. It's gratifying that we're doing what we should be doing, distressing that we're just now getting to it.
I am not terribly optimistic about Iraq, chiefly because we've been floundering about for some time. Also, and noted in the article, at the end of the day, Iraqi politicians have to get their stuff in one sock, something they're not showing much adeptness at. At any rate, read the whole article. It's well worth it.
