Thursday Update
Aug. 9th, 2007 04:27 pmProbably not news that you can use, but it's all I got.
I'm off the pain medicine for my gallbladder. The actual incisions are sore, mostly when I move, but that's no excuse for a Vicodin. I've taken a couple of walks today, and all seems well.
My parents are in town until Saturday morning. It's been wet and rainy in Chicago, so they haven't been golfing, but Mom has nearly shopped Dad out. They should be able to get in some golf tomorrow (I'm too sore to swing a club yet) and they are heading home Saturday.
Comcast's digital cable has been quite helpful for entertaining. I could easily read a book in the evening, but they are TV people. So the Golf Channel and OnDemand movies (pay per view, but you can pause and DVR the movie) has been helpful.
Last night we watched Flags of Our Fathers. I've wanted to see that for a while, and this was a good excuse. It's Clint Eastwood's version of the flag-raising at Iwo Jima, and focuses a lot on the after-effects of the three surviving flag-raisers. Clint's vision isn't flag-waving patriotism (pun intended).
We forget that during WWII, many people were getting very tired of the war, much like today. Also, the US government was dangerously close to going broke. When the first pictures of the flag raising hit US shores, it was seen as a sign of victory. So the three surviving men in that picture were pulled back to the US for the Seventh War Bond Drive. Clint had a lengthy scene in the movie highlighting how close to broke the US was, and thus the war bond drive was critical. The parallels to the US expenses and experiences in Iraq are obvious. It's a good but melancholy movie.
Well, now that I'm off the pain meds, I can have a cocktail, which I think I shall!
