Spirit of America
Nov. 1st, 2007 01:00 pmThrough one milblogger or maybe the Wall Street Journal, I became involved in a small way in Spirit of America, a rather unique charity.
Once US forces got on the ground in Afghanistan, they immediately noted that the people there were desperately poor. Things like paper for schools, children's toys, blankets, you name it people need it. As outlined here, at first troops were writing home and asking for people to send whatever they thought was useful.
As with many ad-hoc efforts, the need was greater then these onesie-twosie efforts could address. So, this charity was formed, matching people in the US with stuff or cash to give and troops in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa with projects to do.
Whatever opinion you have on US foreign policy, Spirit of America is a worthwhile organization. Their projects are aimed at reducing poverty, empowering locals, and improving the lives of others. Not only is that a good reason to give, but every person helped by the US in these countries is one less person shooting at our troops. It's a win-win situation.
You can give online.
