Sentence Day
Apr. 8th, 2008 09:00 amSo, following up on yesterday's post, I've decided to "self-dispatch" and declare a "sentence day" for me. It sounds cool, and besides, I'll be in a training class Tuesday and Wednesday, so blogging will be light.
The rules are:
1) It's done on a day that includes "-day" as the last three letters.
2) You pick a bit of text in keeping with the request. (I have decided on page 50)
3) You share.
4) You tell us what you like about it.
5) We all get to read.
6) There's a tendency of others to reply to each other. (I like this, btw.)

So, what do I like about this bit? Frankly, it's one of the reasons I'm writing this book. When I was a kid, I was fascinated by the story of aviation in WWI - how it went from "guys with pistols" to dogfighting. Also, one of the standard tropes in science fiction is "The Fleet." In everything from Star Trek to Jack Campbell's The Lost Fleet series, we're presented with "the perpetual fleet." It's always been there. Not only that, but in a lot of cases (Campbell being one) it's shockingly like the Royal Navy circa 1916 - dreadnoughts following battle cruisers around. So in this book I'm starting to build a Navy from the Volunteer Space Rescue Service. These people think of themselves as ambulance drivers, but they need to be more like police.
The other thing I like about this excerpt is that I get to explore how idiots get to be in charge. Again, a trope of fiction is "the idiot boss." Although not in this excerpt, we get to see how Newindale got to be top dog at Space Rescue.
