Reading is Fundamental
Apr. 24th, 2008 04:45 pmI just discovered from one of my LJ friends and new favorite writers
j_cheney that the Bush administration, in their infinite wisdom, is zeroing out funding for Reading is Fundamental. This organization, founded in 1966, is the oldest and largest children's and family nonprofit literacy organization in the United States. RIF’s highest priority is reaching underserved children from birth to age 8.
They were planning on getting $26 million from Congress. This number, literally a rounding error in the Federal budget, pays for book distribution to schools and libraries, and distributed 16 million books annually. I think this is the dumbest idea I've heard all day. What happened to No Child Left Behind?
To protest this, please go here for help in creating a letter to send to your Congressman. ETA if your Congressman is not accepting letters electronically, this site will provide contact information.
