Sunday Update
May. 11th, 2008 06:43 pmI am back in town from having gone south to visit Mom for her day. On Saturday, we attended the last concert of the season of the Danville Symphony Orchestra (warning - web site plays music). Prior to the concert, I took Mom out to the Danville Country Club for dinner (they have a pre-concert special). Mom's meal was OK, but the entrees Dad and I ate were underwhelming at best.
The concert program was very idiosyncratic. I suspect for internal political reasons, their featured performer was the principal percussionist, Terrence Mayhew. He played a concerto for marimba and strings by E. Ewazen, which was actually quite nice, and a few jazz tunes on the zylophone. Then they did the old standby The Sorcerer's Apprentice which every Walt Disney fan has heard.
After the break, a guy named Lane Alexander of the Chicago Human Rhythm Project tap-danced while the orchestra played a Tap Dance Concerto written by M. Gould. It was rather weird - I couldn't tell if the guy was supposed to be funny or artistic. My dad summed it up best. "If this guy was supposed to be serious, Donald O'Connor was from Danville, and this guy was no O'Connor. If this guy was supposed to be funny, Dick Van Dyke was from Danville, and this guy's no Dick Van Dyke." They closed with Gershwin's An American in Paris so the event wasn't a complete loss. More importantly, Mom was happy, so I am happy.
The weather sunday turned shitty, with a gale-force wind buffeting my car all the way north to Chicago. I went out to dinner tonight, and got to be amazed at amateur hour in the restaurant. Those that don't do stuff (in this case go out to eat) don't know how to do it, and end up with two-hour waits for dinner. (Or eat at the bar, which I normally do anyway).
Lastly, I got a postcard in the mail for something called the "Xpower Energy Saver." It looks highly bogus, but I'm putting the link here for so I can research it tomorrow and make fun of it. Hey - gotta get content somehow, right? ;-)
