I'm back from Wiscon. Traffic on I-90 in Wisconsin was horrible, so I returned via various state roads. It probably wasn't any faster, but much less frustrating. I've decided to count this trip as my Patriotic Duty to Spend The Stimulus Check. I hope Madison, WI was as stimulated as I was. Erm, moving on...
Madison is a quaint town, and dominated by the University of Wisconsin. The hotel was half-a-block from the Capitol Building in downtown Madison, and there were tons of restaurants and bars within walking distance. Given this and the fact that we had two hour meal breaks, very few people ate at the hotel. I found a nice Irish pub called Brocach right on Capitol Square. They had a large scotch selection, good Irish whiskey and quite tasty pub grub. Their Sunday brunch version of biscuits and gravy was the best I'd ever had. It was more like a sausage stew served over bread then a "gravy."
I finished Toby Buckell's Sly Mongoose
while there. I'll have a more coherent review, but as a teaser, think about this. "Zombies as a biological weapon." Do yourself a favor - preorder this now.
Continuing my stimulus mission, I picked up some books. One of the Guests of Honor, L. Timmel Duchamp, co-founded Aqueduct Press. Since this is being billed as a "feminist SF press" I picked up two books so I can figure out what "feminist SF" means. The first, Alanya to Alanya
, is Book One in Duchamp's Marq'ssan Cycle. I also picked up Sue Lange's book We, Robots
. Sue was in a panel on hard SF, so presumably this is feminist hard SF.
I have to admit, I'm a sucker for an author selling their stuff at a con launch party, so on a whim I picked up Dragon Ring
by Lettie Prell. I have no idea when I'll get these read, but books don't go bad.
As a teaser to my readers and a note to myself, I'll have a follow-up post with thoughts on Duchamp's GoH speech and something Buckell wrote in Sly Mongoose. I'll also have a comment about SFWA and Novelists, Inc.
