I heard Mr. Michael Angelo Caruso speak at a Rotary function, and signed up for his email newsletter. Reprinted with his permission is the latest copy.

1. Being busy isn't always productive.

I was out for a run this morning and noticed another jogger. She was waiting for traffic to clear by doing some fairly frantic stretching. This bouncing motion is called "ballistic" stretching and while it looks cool and feels efficient, slow "static" stretching is much better for you.

2. The stomach knows it's full before the brain does.
Eat slower. Give your gut a chance to report its status. This will help you slow weight gain, too.

3. Wait two lousy seconds before responding.
Use the extra time to think about what you're going to say. Oh, and it's okay to let that cell phone call go to voice mail when you're talking to someone. The world won't come to an end. Really, it won't. Slow down and show respect. Chris's note - this is one thing I'm very bad at doing!

4. Fast thinking is not all it's cracked up to be.
Think things through and you'll usually make better decisions. This is especially true at work, when we receive pressure to perform to dead-lines, specifications and unrealistic expectations.

5. Patience is a virtue.
One of my clients is a manufacturing firm in the southeast. I was interviewing one of their employees who said, "This management-by-objectives thing must not be working. We've been doing it for almost a year now."
