Wild and Crazy Weekend (NOT!)
Aug. 4th, 2008 09:15 amI had a terribly unexciting weekend, about which you're going to read of now. (How's that for fractured but technically correct grammar?)
On the writing front, I have a total of nine queries out to agents, via snail and email. Two of the queries (both email) came back "thanks but no thanks." If nothing else, I still have my Lulu.com account.
After querying, I decided to engage in some home maintenance. The toilet seat in my tiny master bath (just big enough for a shower) had lost some paint, so I decided to replace it. Well, the seat was bolted on via metal bolts with tiny (and completely rusted) nuts, which would not turn. This situation was aggravated by the fact that the only way to see what I was doing involved wedging my head between the toilet and my shower door.
I was seriously contemplating use of a hacksaw, and understanding why the seat hadn't been replaced by a previous owner, when I finally discovered that the nuts relied on plastic washers to work. I was able to cut said washers and remove the old seat. New seats use plastic bolts and big plastic nuts, preventing this problem. My next job, replacing the doorbell button, was easy, although involved two trips to Home Depot, as the first button was less then a quarter inch too wide for the space.
I've gotten into the habit of grilling a steak for Sunday dinner. Jewel sells two 8 ounce rib-eyes in a package, which is two Sunday's worth. The past couple of times I've bought "organic" steaks - vegetarian feed and no antibiotics. Although I suspect that the organic stuff is marginally better for the environment, it's also a buck a pound cheaper! I'm not sure if this was a stealth sale or Jewel passing along a lower production cost. Either way, a buck's a buck.
To wash down the steak, I cracked open a bottle of Menage a Trois red. This is a three grape mixture by a California winery, Folie A Deux. It's not sweet, but it's a lot less dry then either of the three constituent wines usually are. They also make a very nice three-wine Rose, and a three-wine white that I've not had (not a white wine guy.)
