Various right-wing sources have made much of Obama's association with Bill Ayers. In the 1970s, Ayers was, let's be frank, a left-wing terrorist. Obama first met Ayers in the mid-1990s, by which time Ayers had, thanks to his rich dad, a former CEO of ComEd, made himself a fixture in Chicago society. Many people, including me, didn't find out about his terrorist past until a Chicago Tribune Sunday Magazine article came out the weekend after 9/11.
Obama shouldn't have associated with Bill Ayers, but in his defense he probably didn't know about Ayer's past. It wasn't as if Ayers ran around town wearing a "I Am A Terrorist" t-shirt.
It turns out John McCain has his own terrorist problem. Per this article in the Chicago Tribune, McCain is at least as close to convicted felon and general right-wing terrorist G. Gordon Liddy as Obama is to Ayers.
Liddy held fundraisers for McCain, and the two "old friends" gushed with each other on Liddy's radio show. Unlike Obama, who was in grade school when Ayers was running amuck, McCain was an adult during Liddy's felonious activities. Just for the record, a Democrat, Jimmy Carter, commuted Liddy's sentence but did not pardon him. Were it not for that, Liddy wouldn't have gotten out of prison until 2002.
Before somebody says, "but at least Liddy served his time," answer this. "If Bill Ayers had done prison time, would it then be okay to associate with him?" Defenders of McCain who don't answer that question yes or no will have their comments deleted from this blog.
