It's been dry and dusty here in Chicago, and for that matter in Washington DC as well. "Dry and dusty" plus "leaves turning" equals "allergies on full alert" so I'm not operating at 100%. Oh well - it's raining here and we're looking at snow flurries by Saturday, so that should help my allergies.

As I mentioned in my friday post, I spent Saturday touring the Washington area. I wasn't able to figure out where the Tourmobile buses stopped, so I found another tour outfit, Open-Top Sightseeing. They were a tad more expensive, but did the job. I saw the National Cathedral, which was worth the trip, and the usual selection of sites.

I got off the bus at the Lincoln Memorial, and walked about a mile from there to the WWII memorial with a stop at the Vietnam memorial. While at the WWII memorial, I ran into the Quad Cities flight of Honor Flight. This organization takes WWII vets on a free one-day trip to DC, and I've blogged about them before. I ended up chatting for a bit with some of the vets. It was hot on Saturday (low 70s, so hot for November) and the Honor Flight guys all had yellow sweatshirts on, so a few of them were looking for shade.

I was going to visit the Dulles branch of the Air and Space Museum on Sunday, but Metro was doing maintenance on the subway line I needed. Instead I visited Mount Vernon. It was the same amount of travel time, and well worth the trip. Since I was flying out of Dulles Monday, I visited that museum then. A word to the wise - the shuttle from the passenger terminal to the museum is slow and follows a schedule more aspirational then concrete, and Dulles security is in full comic-opera mode, so don't try to hit the museum on a short layover.

I did get some writing done on the laptop, but what really came in handy was the ability in the evening to jump on the Internet and look up stuff, like "how to get to Mount Vernon using public transportation." I took pictures, but haven't had a chance to download them, so I have no idea if any of them are worth posting here.

Tomorrow's post will be my thoughts on my in-flight book, Carolyn Jessop's Escape. She's an ex-member of the so-called Fundamentalist Church of Latter-Day Saints who escaped with her kids.
