Monday Update
Jan. 5th, 2009 02:50 pmI mentioned in a previous post that I had been asked to be on programming for Capricon, a local science fiction convention. Having decided that I wouldn't be going down to visit the folks during their Florida trip (their schedule didn't permit it) I went ahead and registered. I'll let you know what I get put on when I know it.

jaylake, I got this wonderful link to the Bel Geddes #4. It's a concept design for a never-built and gigantic flying boat, which appears to be even bigger then Hughes' Spruce Goose. Bel Geddes, an industrial designer of the inter-war period, was taken by the Dornier DO X, a 12-engine flying boat.
So Bel Geddes designed a 20-engined monstrosity (with 6 reserve engines, capable of being changed out in flight) that would transport 600 people. The damn thing's so big that it's got staterooms inside the entire length of the wing! It literally is big enough to conduct ballroom dancing lessons, held of course in the ballroom.
Besides a fascinating piece of steampunk, the Bel Geddes #4 (ya think he'd have come up with a better name?) I immediately thought of Jackie Powers. She's been trying to design a passenger space ship for a novel she's working on, and using cruise ships as a template. Well, here's another template for anybody building a spaceship. Since this is a flying vehicle, it would be especially useful if your ship needs to land and take off from a planet. At any rate, food for world-building.
