Not only am I alive (first posting since February 18) but I am well. My drama of a technical nature at work last night is resolved, so I'm back in the saddle. I'll have a post on my panel thoughts tomorrow or Wednesday, but today I'd like to discuss "the perfect con hotel."

The perfect con hotel has:

1) A bar in or very near the lobby. The Westin Wheeling, site of Capricon, does not have such a feature. The bar becomes a convienent meeting place for both day-trippers and stay-ins.
2) Said bar offers food - sandwiches and burgers are fine. The only open bar at the Westin, reachable by walking through a closed restaurant, served sushi and was (for food service) Not Fast.
3) A restaurant with some quick and moderately-priced food options. The Holiday Inn Select that hosts Duckon does a breakfast and a dinner buffet, which meets both criteria. Not so the Westin. It's steak place is great, but pricy and Not Fast.
4) The function space should be all on one floor and geographically close. Here is where the Wheeling Westin shines - it's the best programming space of any Chicago con.

Now, we don't live anywhere near perfect (as the commercial says) so Compromises Must Be Made. And overall I am very happy with the choices made by the Capricon ConCom. But there's always room for improvement.
