One of the great unanswered questions is "why is Sarah Palin so popular with conservatives?" There's been a lot of ink spilled and pixels pixelated (or whatever pixels do) over the question, but I think the answer is simple - Rush Limbaugh.

Sarah Palin is, or appears to be, a version of Rush Limbaugh that they can vote for. Now, Limbaugh is, I think, much better at being Limbaugh than Palin is. After all, Limbaugh, being on the radio for hours on end, has been forced to develop and articulate reasons for why he thinks as he does. Also, Limbaugh's staff isn't distracted by having to run a state, so they have time to dig up information.

But in the end, Sarah Palin is the "electable" or at least "I can vote for" Rush Limbaugh.

On a related note, that rabid leftist Peggy Noonan, writing in Pravda The Wall Street Journal, suggests Sarah Palin's departure is A Farewell to Harms. One of the many quotable lines in the article is:

She's not Ivy League, that's why her rise has been thwarted! She represented the democratic ideal that you don't have to go to Harvard or Brown to prosper, and her fall represents a failure of egalitarianism." This comes from intellectuals too. They need to be told something. Ronald Reagan went to Eureka College. Richard Nixon went to Whittier College, Joe Biden to the University of Delaware.

Rush Limbaugh, who is a very respected commentator and a smart man, dropped out of Southeast Missouri State after two semesters. ETA I'm not being sarcastic here. Nobody makes a big deal about Limbaugh's education (or, for that matter that famous Harvard dropout Bill Gates) because their public remarks usually sound well-thought out.

Palin's remarks do not usually sound well-thought out. end edit
