Going to the Grand!
Aug. 6th, 2009 03:23 pmSo, I am taking tomorrow off - my Dad and I are going to the Grand American Trap Shoot, being held for the third year in a row in lovely Sparta, Il. This will be my first year to visit the Sparta site.
I've been to the previous Grand location, Vandalia, Ohio. They started shooting there in the 1920s, back when it was an open field. Now it's right on the end of an active runway at Dayton International Airport, (literally inside the airport security fence) and they just can't accommodate the crowd. Fortunately, Illinois Governor Rod "Bleeping Gold" Blagojevich got some state money and created a huge shooting sports complex on a reclaimed strip mine. We even got some waivers on Illinois gun sales laws for the event.
It's 220 miles from my dad's house, so I'm heading down tonight and we'll go tomorrow from there. The weather report suggests it will be hot but not un-Godly so. I'm not a competitive shooter, but the Ruger Red Label is in the car.
