First, you all have heard of the extravagant "riders" rock musicians put on their contracts - things like "no green M & M candies in the suite" and the like. Well, according to these folks, the rider got started as a test of reading comprehension.
Two items smurched from Making Light:

- In WWI, the Czech nation was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Czechs were not happy about that, especially since they kept getting drafted into the Imperial army. Well, in one of the few good ideas to come out of Czarist Russia, a legion of Czech POWs was created to fight Austria, with a promise of Czech freedom. When Russia abruptly left the war, the Czech legion fought their way to Vladivostock and helped create an independent Czechoslovakia.
