It's Friday, and therefore time for another serving of link salad.

A) I've been watching the coverage of the disaster in Haiti with great sadness. The problem with a disaster in a poor area is that the people don't have a lot of reserves or spare resources. (That's rather the definition of poor.) So I've been doing what I can, which is giving. Along those lines, I became affiliated via Rotary with Mission Outreach, a smaller charity that provides medical equipments to mission clinics. They are a branch of the Sisters of Mercy, and have facilities on the ground in Haiti. Operational facilities, in need of more stuff. In fact, their first relief shipment left, via the US Navy, yesterday. Online donations available at the link.

B) On the subject of Haiti, did they really "sign a pact with the devil" as certain piss-poor excuses for Christians ask? Well, surprisingly enough, no, not really.

C) So, certain conservatives have been yapping that "Yemen is the next front on the War on Terror(tm)." Maybe so, or maybe Bin Laden just wants the US to go bankrupt chasing his ghosts. Either way, it might be, useful to understand what happened there before we send in the 82nd Airborne. This gentleman tells the story of a brutal war between the British and the locals which took place in the 1960s. I'm not sure of his biases, but the author claims that the war resulting in Colonel Sir David Stirling, founder of the British SAS, creating the first modern private military company to fight that war. Also ironic, Col. Stirling ran a TV production company responsible for bringing "Sesame Street" to British TV.

They say three things make a post, and this is getting long for link salad, so I'll close for the day. Have a nice weekend.
