Two Science-Fictional Thoughts
Apr. 1st, 2010 10:25 amFirst, Scientific American and the artist Ron Miller collaborated on this spectacular Interactive Tour of the 8 Wonders of the Solar System. (Full disclosure - Ron was also one of the first people to say that he liked my book - he's the earliest review at the link.)
Second, one of the issues that would face any space colony is growing food. Here's an interesting article about commercial growing of tomatoes in greenhouses. It highlights both the good and bad of current practices. An interesting comment was that Canada's "greenhouse capital" Leamington, is too far north to profitably grow tomatoes in the winter - there's not enough sunlight. Which makes me wonder - considering Mars gets about half the sunlight that Earth does, would tomatoes grow on Mars?

j_cheney sent me an ARC of her new novella, which arrived last night in the mail.
