It's rainy and cool in Chicago, so have some links instead of original content. (You get what you pay for!)

Blogging: Everybody thinks blogging is the hot new thing. Well, this article makes the case that blogging is just a high-tech version of an 18th Century newspaper. Back then, newspapers were just more-or-less random collections of whatever the editor thought was newsworthy, and sourcing was "well, somebody told me..." at best. (Found via Making Light)

Politics: Yes, I talk a lot about politics here. What do you expect from a guy with a minor in Poli Sci? There are a lot of arguments about "left" vs. "right" in politics. There is some use to those terms, but attempting to categorize a political party on a one-dimensional line is tough. From Jerry Pournelle, his very useful grid, which classifies political systems by level of belief in government power and "rationalism." It's worth a look.

History: One of the things that frustrates me about the Tea Party is their historical illiteracy. This article explains why that's a problem.

Space: The closest thing to having a colony in space is living in Antarctica. Here's a wonderful (but big) article with pictures of the latest generations of Antarctic stations. (Found via another cool blog, Rocketpunk Manifesto.

Medicine and Science: Via [livejournal.com profile] jaylake, some very interesting research that suggests we are our bacteria, and variations in the bacterial population in our guts controls a lot about our health. There's even some suggestions that the "right" bacterial population can make you overweight!
