Thanks to Christopher Columbus, I have the day off today. It's especially helpful considering that I had a busy weekend. Friday night I was downtown watching Chicago Shakespeare Theater's production of Romeo and Juliet. It was a decent production, but not as rousing as some of their other plays.
On Saturday, I drove up to Lake Geneva to help with our district's RYLA program. RYLA, which is "Rotary Youth Leadership Awards," is a three-day program for high school kids to teach leadership skills. My role was in the "Reality Store" activity. Basically, the kids are asked on Friday "what do you want to be when you're 25?" Then, on Saturday night, they are handed a paycheck for a month (with taxes taken out) and told to procure everything from a car to groceries for the month.
One would be surprised at the number of kids who get way in over their heads in terms of buying nice cars. Or maybe not - they are still kids. Let's just say that our auto dealership did a brisk business in trade-ins as the kids dialed back.
All in all, a fun and busy weekend.
