I spent the majority of yesterday driving around, and since blogging and driving don't mix, I skipped the blogging. Not that I had a lot to say. I also find that I have very little to say today. The weather has turned cooler, and my hibernation instinct has kicked in, making for slow-moving mornings.
Moving on to more substantial thoughts, I present I was anti-gun, until I got stalked. Now, readers here know that I own guns, and am actually a member of the NRA, so I'm generally in support of the author's decision.
Since the article was posted on Salon, a liberal-ish site, I glanced at the comments, and have a couple of points:
Salon commenter said: He'll take the gun away from you!
My response: Maybe. Trying to grab a snub-nosed revolver from somebody is an excellent way to get shot in the hand and/or arm.
Salon commenter said: Now that he knows you're armed, he'll attack from behind / with surprise / dressed like a Ninja!
My response: Oh, like he was going to send an engraved invitation before? Yes, and it appears that the author has considered those possibilities.
In general, getting a gun is not a sure-fire means of self-defense. There are always potential scenarios whereby the gun doesn't help or isn't available. (I doubt she showers with her gun, for instance.) But here's a news flash: in life, there is no such thing as a sure thing. Having a gun is not a guarantee of safety. It does, in this case, provide additional options. Hopefully the author will never need those options, but at least now she has them.
