waiting for Hugo
Aug. 20th, 2011 07:53 pmI'm resting my slightly-gouty knee and waiting to go to dinner, so I broke out the Xoom and decided to blog. Herewith are a few random thoughts:
1) I'm staying at the Peppermill, which is 7 blocks from the main con hotel and convention center. Shuttle bus service has been (so I hear) poor at best, so I've been driving it. Glad I kept the rental car! I've been parking at the Atlantis (free) which means a block walk on the skybridge.
2) Speaking of walking, the convention center is enormous, as is the casino, so I've been getting plenty of exercise. Tomorrow is more of a driving day, as I am blowing off the con and driving to and around(ish) Lake Tahoe. The weatherbug app says I should have good weather.
3) In an earlier post, I said settling Las Vegas was that era's equivalent of settling Mars. Well, considering the weather here, I have a new appreciation of that fact. Daytime highs have been right at 90 F, but the nights drop into the 50s. With a little use of shade and the fact that it's a dry heat, you COULD live here without AC.
4) Lastly, my Xoom is nearly perfect for short trips! I wouldn't want to write a novel on this, but to deal with emails and short blogs it's just the ticket. My only irritation is that some websites "think" I'm on a mobile phone, and give me a small screen version and refuse to allow me to pick a regular-sized site. Hopefully that will sort itself out over time.
My stomach is telling me it's time for dinner, so I'm signing off for now.
