Crater Lake & Klamath Falls
Sep. 27th, 2011 10:34 pmIt's every bit of 4 hours drive from Redding to Crater Lake. About half of the drive is on I-5, the crookedest Interstate I've ever driven. But since you're threading a needle around Shasta Lake and under Mt. Shasta, I guess it has to be. One then gets off at Weed, CA, and take US 97 north. There are two towns on the 50 miles of road, each with one gas station. Otherwise, the road is empty. Very pretty scenery, but no people.
Crater Lake is spectacular! Until the end of October or snowfall, whichever comes first, you can drive around the entire lake, and stop at any or all of 30 scenic overlooks. I was a bit concerned when I got there and it was spitting cold rain from low clouds (actually, the rim road is over 7,000 feet, so the clouds were normal - I was high.) But, by the time I finished lunch, the clouds had broken.
I had to drive through Klamath Falls to get to the park, so the trip to my hotel was familiar. The hotel, a Best Western, does not have a restaraunt, so I had to get adventurous. I ended up at a micro-brewery, this place: http://kbbrewing.com/ highly recommended!
I was thinking of hitting Lava Beds National Monument tomorrow, but since I discovered that I need to drive right through southern Oregon wine country, I think I'll look at grapes tomorrow instead!
