Random Thoughts, ConFusion Edition
Jan. 24th, 2012 10:28 amA few thoughts about ConFusion.
1) The hotel was overall very good for the con. The open bar/lounge area was midway between the elevators, parking garage and the programming areas. Basically, everybody had to walk past the bar sooner or later. I did find it odd that the hotel's sit-down restaurant was closed for dinner - they had a special "con-only" buffet there - and if you wanted to eat from the menu, you did so at the bar. I also found the hotel unusually chilly, as did others. Usually at con hotels I'm hot, but not this one.
2) At one of the panels, while talking about realism in fiction, one of the panelists told an interesting story. While filming Lord of the Rings, there was supposed to be a scene where one of the bad guys gets impaled in the back, and Peter Jackson, the director, was telling the impaled actor to scream bloody murder. Christopher Lee was on set, and he tapped Jackson on the shoulder.
"Peter," Christopher said, "that won't do at all. When you stab somebody in the back, you are trying to take the air out of the lungs. They don't shout at all, rather they make a quiet little 'eep' sound."
The room was silent for a moment, until everybody remembered that Lee was in the Long-Range Desert Patrol during WWII, and just may have stabbed somebody in the back once or twice.
"Do it like the commando said!" Jackson replied.
3) I had a conversation with Jay Lake (
jaylake) in which he told me a little about the premise of his upcoming SunSpin space opera series. Since he hasn't shared it online, I won't, but the book went from "may buy" to "write faster, Jay!"
