Hugo Nominations
Feb. 16th, 2012 10:17 amPosted here (as much for my own reference as anything else) are what I will be nominating for a Hugo this year. Editorial comments follow each category.
Novels
Up Against It - M. J. Locke
Highest Frontier - Joan Slonczewski
Count to a Trillion - John C. Wright
Leviathan Wakes - James S. A. Corey
Buffalito Contingency - Lawrence Schoen
Comments: I'm pretty sure all of these books except Buffalito were bought as a result of a Scalzi "Big Idea" piece.
Novellas
The Ice Owl - Carolyn Ives Gilman, Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction
Comments: Novellas are always a difficult segment of the ballot for me. About my only regular source of novellas is Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. I'm finding that publication is developing more of an "academic" style, which is not mine.
Novelettes
A Long Walk Home - Jay Lake, Subterranean Magazine
Citizen Astronaut - David Levine, Analog
A Militant Peace - Toby Buckell and David Klecha, Clarkesworld
Object 3 - James L. Cambias, Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction
Of Ambergris, Blood and Brandy - J. Kathleen Cheney, Abyss and Apex
Comments: All of these, except for the one F & SF selection, were made available free online.
Short Story
Hello, Said the Gun - Jay Lake, Daily SF
Bit Rot - Charles Stross, Engineered Infinity (anthology)
Prismatrix - Z. S. Adani, The Last Outpost (anthology, Hadley Rille Books)
Pro Artist
John Picacio
Editor, Long Form
Eric C. Reynolds
Comments: Gotta dance with them what brought ya.
Semi-pro zine
Clarkesworld
Lightspeed Magazine
Subterranean Magazine
Abyss and Apex
Fan Writer
Steven B. Silver
The rest of the ballot will be blank - I don't have any strong opinions for nominations.
