Post-Weekend Personal Update
Feb. 27th, 2012 11:25 amThis past weekend proved to be surprisingly interesting. First, I read and enjoyed Michael Flynn's latest SF novel, In The Lion's Mouth. The book, set in his "Spiral Arm" universe, features various far-future humans running about among the stars. It ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, but was still enjoyable.
On Saturday morning, I had a grant committee meeting with my Rotary district. I got some good news regarding funding for a medical project I've been trying to do in western Kenya. There are still many ways this project can go pear-shaped, as our British cousins would stay, but now that I have the money I can move forward.
On the writing front, I'm about halfway through the hopefully final before-the-editor-sees-it draft of The Night Watch. On the one hand that's good news, but on the other hand the second half of the book is a bit rawer, and so will need more work. On the first leg (since I've ran out of hands), because plot and characters are set, this pass will be mainly description and light editing. In other words, in this pass I'm "just" getting stuff that's in my head on the page, as opposed to thinking up stuff from whole cloth.
I spent last night watching the Oscars, although I haven't seen any of the movies that got awards, so I found it hard to give a damn. I'm becoming increasingly less fond of going out to the movies. A big-screen TV, my chair and my already-paid-for refreshments (including those of the adult variety) require that the movie house offer something extra special indeed.
