Some Random Thoughts On A Theme
Oct. 26th, 2012 09:52 amSeveral GOP politicians and candidates recently have made frankly repugnant and ignorant comments on rape. These vary in repugnancy and ignorance, and even if you are living under a rock I'm sure you've heard them. I won't, therefore, repeat any of them.
One of the things that define a good writer is the ability to get into the heads of their characters. Even, or especially, repugnant characters. After all, Hitler and Stalin went to their graves thinking they had done nothing wrong.
Yesterday, John Scalzi used his skills as a writer to write a fan letter from a rapist to certain conservative politicians. (Warning: can be a trigger!) In this post, Scalzi very much gets into the mindset of your typical rapist, and makes two points:
1) Rape is much more about control than sex.
2) Denying women who have been raped the ability to decide on an abortion by definition and possibly by intent denies the woman control over her own body.
Scalzi has delivered a powerful piece of writing, and I wish to associate myself whole-heartedly with his thoughts. His post is an example of using writing to accomplish good things in society.
