Central DuPage Hotel
As mentioned yesterday, Mom had her hip redone. She had the surgery done by a specialist at Central DuPage Hospital, jokingly referred to as "Central DuPage Hotel" by locals. It really is a very nice hospital - the patient rooms and public areas look more like a four-star hotel then a hospital. Mom's surgery was scheduled for 12:30 (third hip by that surgeon that day) but this of course slipped to 1:30. It wasn't until 7 PM that she was in a room, which meant for us a long day sitting around in a waiting room. It was a nice waiting room, but a waiting room nonetheless.
Weekend Media Consumption
Over the weekend, I watched two movies, and yesterday (which was for me a weekend) read a book. The first movie was the new James Bond flick Skyfall. This franchise has become "action movies for adults" which means one can actually see the action. It was enjoyable enough, and had several deliberate nods to the beginning of the series. This was dealt with in the movie by having the villain be an evil hacker who used to work for MI6. Thus, to defeat him Bond had to go all analog.
The second movie was Savages, which I saw on pay-per-view. It's Oliver Stone's ode to the drug war, and again was quite entertaining. Neither Savages or Skyfall had much in the way of profound thoughts, but not everything needs to be War and Peace. Both movies are recommended.
Lastly, I read Bull by the Horns: Fighting to Save Main Street from Wall Street and Wall Street from Itself. This book, written by former FDIC head Sheila Bair, is a gripping account of her actions during the recent financial crisis. As an officer of a bank regulated by the FDIC, I'll not comment on the substance of her actions, but the book is well-written and will be an important historical document. I will say that I don't think Tim Geithner is on her Christmas card list! Highly recommended.
