KCMO, Navigation Thereof

I arrived yesterday in KCMO (Kansas City, Missouri for those not in the know) and after I got my rental car got lost. I misread an 8 for a 3 on my directions, and so got a bit of a scenic tour of the city. I eventually made it to my reasonably nice hotel. Then I drove to a Hadley Rille event following my editor's car, and we both got a little lost. This morning, I drove to catch a movie (more below) and again got a bit lost.

The problem, I have decided, is that this part of Kansas City is not well laid-out. The roads run radially from downtown KC, and we're far enough out that old main roads cut diagonally across older main roads. The Interstate (I-70) winds around a bit randomly, resulting in (for example) 39th Street, the street my hotel is on, periodically ending and resuming. Then, various suburban planners decided winding streets were more picturesque or whatever, and laid out a bunch of winding streets.

Star Trek: Into Darkness

Since I had the time and I am a Certified Geek (tm) I went to see the latest Star Trek. The pictures were pretty, Eve Alice was easy on the eye, and shit got blown up real good. I have to say, I really enjoyed the visual style of the movie. There was a great mix of old (as in, "our era" old) and new, and the ships looked suitably industrial.

The plot sucked mightily. Basically, J. J. Abrams decided to remake Star Trek II, but just flipped Kirk and Spock's character at random intervals. On top of the horrible logic of the Star Trek universe, we got all of the same lack of internal logic we saw in Abram's first outing. This does not bode well for his Star Wars efforts.
