The Hugo Awards have brought out the usual whining about who won and why. Now the best novel went to John Scalzi for Redshirts, which was not my pick. Even so, John Ringo's rant about Scalzi "kissing up to the liberal Hugo voters" and general whining about "liberal New York publishing" gripes my ass. Here's why:

1) 90% of Scalzi's readership neither know nor care about his politics.

2) Those "liberal" publishers (including Tor, Scalzi's house) publish noted illiberal authors like John C. Wright and Orson Scott Card.

3) The "conservative" publisher Baen publishes and hires as an editor the card-carrying Socialist (literally - I've seen his card) Eric Flint.

Publishing is a business. Scalzi sold 100,000+ copies of his book because people like his stories. Because people like his stories, he got the shiny rocket.

Libertarians love the free market. The free market has no obligation to love them back.
