I am back from Windycon, where I had a good time. My reading (Friday at 5 PM) was actually attended, in part because I posted signs. I didn't get a room at the hotel, since I dumped a bunch of money in London, but I made a brief sweep of the parties, and had a nice conversation with Elizabeth Bear. Jim Hines ([livejournal.com profile] jimhines) was in attendance, but we didn't have much of a conversation.

One of my two panels turned contentious. It was the "women in science" panel and what got everybody's teeth on edge was one of the panelist's tendencies to babble on while using academic buzzwords. I lost the election to be moderator, but managed to keep the panel from devolving into an episode of The Jerry Springer Show.

Fire With Fire

Over the weekend, I read (more like "devoured") Charles Gannon's latest novel Fire with Fire. It was really good, and one of the few space operas / mil-SF novels to come up with a reasonable answer as to why the bad guys don't just nuke everybody from orbit.

Libertarians love Thomas Jefferson

[livejournal.com profile] james_nicoll is a reviewer of note, and recently reviewed a libertarian SF novel. In the review, James wondered why libertarians thing so highly of Thomas Jefferson. The answer is simple - Jefferson was opposed to the US Constitution. He was in Paris at the time, so his influence was limited, but he was against the whole idea. (In typical Jefferson fashion, this didn't stop him from being President in the new system.)
