Review: The Farm
Dec. 15th, 2014 11:12 amOver the weekend, I read (in one night, actually) Tom Rob Smith's latest novel The Farm. It was a great read.
The story starts promisingly. 30-something man living in London gets a call from his father, recently retired to a farm in Sweden. "You're mother's going crazy," he says. Then mom calls, telling him she's at the airport.
The bulk of the story is then that of Mom telling her story of murder and child sex abuse. It's a gripping tale, and very interesting. Things become even more interesting when we learn of Mom's childhood, which involves the death of her best friend Freda and Mom's running away from home at 16.
Yet what is most interesting to me is Smith's ending. He avoids both the usual thriller ending and what looked like a typical downcast "literary" ending. Over all, highly recommended.
