Like the label on the tin says:
Random Thought - Insiders
Comes news today that the co-pilot deliberately crashed the Germanwings airliner. This is a preliminary finding and thus may change. However, if true, it won't be the first time a pilot decided to crash a passenger plane.
Here's the root problem - it is impossible to completely prevent any insider from sabotaging any given system. Whether it's defrauding a bank or crashing a plane, some level of trust must be extended to the humans who operate the system. Yes a plane can be built to fly completely automatically, but systems fail and somebody needs to be on hand to fix the failures. One of the failure modes is "broke automation" so that means somebody needs to be able to turn off the automation. And so, we're back to where we started.
Random Thought - Nobody Knows Anything
One of the things which some writers (and other creators) get Cranky On The Internet about is how editors and other "gatekeepers" just clearly can't (or worse, won't) see their True Shining Genius. Well, here's a movie on which the gatekeepers dropped $30 million, filled with stars and other competent people, which ended up sucking donkey's balls.
In short, NOBODY KNOWS what will or won't be a success. This causes competent people to be cautious. (Incompetent people are inherently unpredictable.)
