Management By Walking Around
Jul. 17th, 2015 09:38 amMany years and many pounds ago, I was in the US Navy. As part of my training, we were exposed to various management theories. One of the theories I took to heart is "management by walking around."
It's simple, really - in order to lead people or manage things, one has to actually see ground truth. You need to see what your people are doing, what your clients / customers are experiencing, and what physical condition your equipment is in.
I know it's in vogue for people to work from home / remote workplaces or generally everywhere but the office. And I'm fine with that in theory. But in practice, effective management requires some face-to-face interaction. Management by email or phone call is not, and cannot, be as effective as management by being there.
