Aliette de Bodard, a French-Vietnamese-American writer, had, a while back, interesting thoughts on colonialism. For those not clicking through, her key point was that, for the majority of the colonizers and the colonized, colonialism was seen as a good thing. For example, "People in the colonized countries thought it was the natural order of things, too—that they had to modernize in order to compete, to become more Western because the West was so clearly intrinsically superior."

A long while back, I wrote a brief article pointing to another article about why people in abusive relationships don't just leave. Well, de Bodard's article has the answer.

People on both sides of abusive relationships have convinced themselves that the relationship is "right."
