I've been looking forward to this book for some time, so when it arrived on my Kindle I cleared my calendar and read it. I've been a fan of John Scalzi and I can tell you he didn't disappoint. However, what I can't tell you is much about the plot, because it's got several surprises.
What I can tell you is that Scalzi did a great job with his characters. He creates a very believable psychopath (it took me some time to make that diagnosis) and several characters who grow and change significantly during the story. One in particular is faced with a choice of doing what they want vs. doing what is needed.
It was also interesting, for certain values of "interesting" reading this during a pandemic. The world of the Interdependency is facing a world-ending event which is outlined in the prologue. Watching Scalzi's characters respond to that crisis while watching the real world responding to the (fortunately) less-world-ending COVID-19 crisis was eerie. There were a lot of clear parallels.
I've read all three books so I can't comment on how standalone this book is, but I enjoyed it greatly.
