Feedback

Everybody needs feedback on their performance. In my other job, writer, I submitted a novel for publication. In something of an unusual event for this industry, instead of getting the usual "this manuscript does not meet our needs at this time" I got feedback. Two specific items, as it happens.

To summarize, I was told:
1) We don't feel we get to understand your lead character
2) Too many secondary characters

Over the weekend, I reread the manuscript and I see their points. That's the first big takeaway to feedback - understanding and accepting the other person's point of view. The second big takeaway is to make changes as appropriate to the feedback. That's my next project, and involves a rewrite of the book.

Although I'm using writing as an example, feedback is critical in any job, and one's response should be similar- understand the feedback and make changes as appropriate. Frankly, at least occasionally the "changes as appropriate" may be to update one's resume and seek other employment. Again, that's okay. If you're not a good fit at your current company, bashing your head against the wall will only result in you getting a headache.

Well, the other day job (the one that pays more) is calling, so I will leave you with this thought.
